Combustion aspects of the consolidated mixtures of boron and sodium nitrate at cryogenic temperature(*in Japanese)

This investigation deals with the fundamental combustion characterisitics of the consolidated mixtures of boron and sodium nitrate. The initial pressure was varied from ca. 0.01 MPa to 5 MPa. The initial temperatures tested were 77 K(boiling point of liquid nitrogen) and 293 K(room temperature). The burning rate, temperature sensitivity, and heat of reaction were obtained and combustion products were identified.
The consolidated mixtures burned even at 77 K or at low pressure. The relationship between burning rate and pressure under different initial temperatures obeyed
Vieille's Law. The temperature sensitivities of the burning rate were in the range of
1-3×10-3K-1, same as those of boron / potassium nitrate mixtures. The burning rate increased as the concentration of boron increased up to 40 wt%.
The equilibrium. thermodynamic calculations of the tested mixtures were carried out by means of STANJAN, modeling the situation in the calorimeter bomb. Using this program, assuming constant volume, adiabatic flame temperature, heat of reaction, and combustion products were estimated. The main combustion products at 298 K were to be B, BN, B2O3, NaBO2, Na and N2. From the results of X - ray diffraction analysis, B, BN, and NaBO2 were identified.
