Assessment of the behaviors of liquid energetic materials and the pressure generated in the applications of pulse wire discharge

Dr. Yoshiaki Takahashi is conducting experimental investigations aimed at expanding the application of discharge disruption technology in urban environments. The study encompasses direct high-speed photography and measurements using a piezoelectric film stress gauge to analyze the physical behavior of a metallic wire subjected to an energy discharge in nitromethane, a liquid energetic material, contained within a vessel. The direct imaging results revealed that the metallic wires did not emit light immediately after the discharge; instead, they began to emit light at approximately 35 µs, indicating a delayed temperature rise in the wires. The onset of strong light emission from the entire liquid coincided with the peak current in the fine wires at 55 µs. Additionally, it was observed that the explosion of the metallic wires occurred around 55 µs within the cartridge. The application of high voltage resulted in the explosion of the metallic wire, producing a relatively low-pressure shock wave. However, no immediate reaction of the liquid energetic material was observed following the discharge; instead, a gradual and intense explosive reaction ensued after the wire explosion. The reaction products expanded gradually over time into a hemispherical shape, with an expansion rate of approximately 185 ms-1.
These findings provide valuable insights into discharge disruption technology, which not only facilitates its broader application but also serves as a significant contribution to explosion safety technology. Consequently, this work represents a notable contribution to the Japan Explosive Society and merits consideration for the Japan Explosive Society Technical Award.
