Abstract

The wet degradation of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol was studied by the Fenton and photo-Fenton reactions known as the Fenton reagent (a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and ferrousion (Fe2+)). As the new Fenton's reagent, ferric ion (Fe3+) was also used. It was shown for both reactions that the nitro group in 2,4,6-trinitrophenol was mineralized to nitrate ions. The TOC is mineralized to carbon dioxide and water for almost the photo-Fenton reactions, but not completely for the Fenton reaction. When ferric ion is used instead of ferrous ion in the photo-Fenton reaction, the degradation of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol is promoted.
The photo-Fenton reaction using ferrous ion produced a solid residue or colloidal particles, but that using ferric ion did not produce any. This suggests that the new Fenton reagent can be used for the practical degradation of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol.
